Hive Bodies

We currently offer six designs suitable for use with either a deep or medium hive body. We will soon be offering these with an optional name plate as part of the composition.

 

The hive bodies are constructed to conform to the size of standard hive body equipment, including a frame rest. The maximum carving depth is less than 3/8". Hand holds are present on the sides of the hive body - but obviously not on the front (carved) side. There is no hand hold on the back panel either (opposite the carved "front")..

 

The hive bodies are made from cypress - although pine is available as an option. The cypress is milled in this region and air dried to 12-15% moisture content. This results in an excellent material for hive body use. And of course, cypress can be left unfinished as it is naturally disease and rot resistant.

 

The hive bodies are bare wood and ready for the finishing solution of your choice. Some folks paint them as they would a "regular" hive body. Some apply a white paint, then paint the carving with other colors. Others are choosing to use an exterior oil finish. Some are staining the carving, and then applying an exterior coating. We do not recommend using polyurethane type finishes as these may degrade more quickly in sunlight than other finishes. Lastly, some are leaving the cypress natural.
